Environmental Psychology

Environmental psychology conducts research, teaching and collaborations focused on the interaction between people and the environment from the perspective of the individual.

The environmental psychology research group was one of the first in Europe to focus on this subject. The subject is a separate doctoral subject that was established in 1980 under the leadership of Professor Rikard Küller.

The subject deals with how people experience their surroundings and are affected by them, as well as how humans affect the environment through their behaviour.

The research encompasses the relationship to both the physical and social environment with a basis in the needs of various groups, including children and the elderly.

Environmental psychology takes a holistic view of the environment, and the individual is studied in relation to interiors, urban spaces, landscapes and global environmental conditions with a particular focus on biodiversity and climate change.. Research results have practical significance for the understanding of the individual’s role in reaching many of the Global Sustainable Development Goals.

Education

Environmental psychology has most of its teaching at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment, but also offers courses to students at other departments at LTH and Lund University - at first, second and third cycle level.
